THIRTEEN

I called Zane for an assist. As alpha of the pack and the chief of police, he’d want to be here.

Zane picked up on the second ring. “What’s going on?” he asked.

“I tracked the needles used to inject the dervishes to a wolf’s house.”

“Are you sure?”

“The wind is adamant about it, but it’s not like I’ve seen the needles yet. I’m outside the house. I’d tell you which one, but there are no addresses, signs, or roads.”

“Give me a couple of minutes,” he said. “I’ll be there soon. If someone comes out of the house, talk about the weather or something. Do not engage.”

“Got it.”

As I waited for him, I called Grandma Fina.

“Hello, darling,” she said when she answered.

“Hello, Grandma. I’m not sure how to tell you this, so I’ll just say it. A tornado caused by a dervish destroyed your house. But it’s not the dervish’s fault,” I hurried to say. “It looks like someone made the dervishes lose control. They’re all at the hospital right now being treated. However, your house is gone.”

Grandma Fina sighed. “That’s disappointing on both accounts. Well, I can’t do anything about it now. Can you still look into lodging for me and my guests?”

“Your house wasn’t the only one damaged,” I said. “Basia’s place is going to be packed. Do you want to delay your trip until your house is rebuilt?”

“Nonsense. Who do you know in Forgotten Falls so far?”

“Well, there’s my roommate Niles.”

Grandma Fina tsked at the mention of Niles. That was fair. Most people did.

“Zane, Thyrius, Broddi, Ranulf, Vesper, Angel, and Sin at the police station. Rue, who owns the donut shop. She’s living at Basia’s right now. There are a few other witches I know in passing. Otherwise, there’s Roman.”

“Roman?” Grandma Fina’s voice perked at his name. “Is he still as handsome as ever?”

“Um. Yes?”

She sighed. “As a little girl, I used to adore Roman. Such a looker. But my parents didn’t allow me to interact with vampires. When I got older and a bit more rebellious, I flirted with him, but perhaps I was still too green in the art of seduction. He never looked my way. Well, not in the way I had hoped. But he was always kind to me. Be a dear and use your charm on him to see if he’d like company for a few days.”

“You want to stay in the Vampire Shire?”

“No reason not to.”

“People keep telling me to stay away. Even Roman said he wouldn’t want me there at night, which I don’t understand. The vampires haven’t attacked or killed anyone for decades.”

“Ah. But the temptation is always there. Having humans around is like me sitting at the pool and having the pool boy arrive shirtless and glistening. The restraint to resist is overwhelming.”

“Then why would you want to stay in the Vampire Shire?”

“I never minded a little nibble,” she said with a laugh. “Don’t worry about me, dear. I can take care of a feisty vampire.”

“I’ll ask Roman and get back to you.
